Choosing the right activity for your child is a big decision. At Lincoln Karate Clinic, parents often ask similar questions when exploring our program. Below are answers to the most common ones we hear.
1. Is karate safe for my child?
Yes. Safety is a top priority at Lincoln Karate Clinic. Kids Karate Classes are structured, age-appropriate, and closely supervised by trained instructors. Students learn control, respect, and discipline before advanced techniques are introduced.
2. What age can my child start karate?
Children can typically begin training as young as kindergarten in our acclaimed children’s karate classes called Tigers! We have also re-started our Jr. Tigers program that is for our 4/5 year old pre-k students. Our older kids and teens who are interested in karate, start under our Dragons program. Our curriculum is designed to meet students where they are developmentally, helping them build confidence, coordination, and focus at every stage.
3. Does my child need prior experience?
No experience is needed at all. When searching for karate near me or kids karate in Lincoln, Nebraska and people find us, we often get this questions. No prior experience is necessary! Although we regular enroll students who have some experience at other martial arts schools, many if not most of our students start with no background in martial arts. We guide each child step-by-step and help them progress at their own pace.
4. How does karate help outside the dojo (karate school)?
Karate builds life skills that carry over into school and home, including:
-
Improved focus and listening
-
Increased confidence and self-esteem
-
Respect for adults and peers
-
Better self-discipline and emotional control
Parents often notice positive changes within the first few months. In addition, we have two premier programs for children and teens that is not available anywhere else!
5. Will karate help my child with confidence or behavior?
Absolutely. Our program emphasizes goal-setting, perseverance, and accountability. Students are recognized for effort, improvement, and positive attitudes—not just physical ability.
6. How often should my child attend class?
Our beginner students at Lincoln Karate Clinic attend twice per week. For the value, we just don’t think 1x/week is enough. In addition, we also don’t want to burn out students and parents with being at karate class every night. Most advanced students attend 2–3 classes per week, which helps maintain consistent progress while fitting into busy family schedules. Our team helps parents choose a schedule that works best.
7. How does belt promotion work?
Students earn belt promotions through consistent attendance, effort, and demonstration of skills—not by time alone. Promotions are designed to motivate students and teach patience, commitment, and goal achievement. We accomplish our belt ranks through a series of stripe promotions and do belt testing on a quarterly basis. Every single stripe and belt are earned at LKC and this creates amazing black belts!
8. What makes Lincoln Karate Clinic different from other programs?
Lincoln Karate Clinic focuses on character development just as much as martial arts skills. We create a welcoming, family-oriented environment where students are encouraged, supported, and challenged to be their best. Lincoln Karate Clinic was established in 1998 by mental health counselor and behavior management expert, Scott Walls. You can learn more about Scott Walls at www.kickscounseling.com.
9. Can parents watch classes?
Yes! Parents are welcome to observe classes. Many enjoy seeing their child’s progress firsthand and celebrating their achievements.
10. How do we get started?
Getting started is easy. New students often begin with an introductory program that allows them to experience classes, meet instructors, and see if karate is the right fit. Some students join our basic program right away, and some take their time sometimes needing to warm up to the idea. For sure, we do not pressure students to enroll as we want everyone to be on board with their new journey in martial arts training!
And the big question! What does it cost?
We understand budgets and we think we have a plan that fits most people and their financial situation. We also think that compared to other activities, karate at Lincoln Karate Clinic is probably a bargain. We have different options for our enrollments and these prices vary based on the option. We charge for the first two members/students and the 3rd, 4th or even 5th child in the family is free! We have some folks who pay their entire program at once and they receive a major discount. But, many opt for our monthly payment plans and these generally range from $130.00 to $189.00/month
Final Thoughts?
